I was an entrant rather than a juror the last two years but I was a pre-screener for Critical Mass 2009 and I couldn’t help but notice that there were a lot more than 175 strong portfolios among the 525 submissions. Sure enough, when the list came out of the top 175 portfolios (to go out to the full group of over 200 Critical Mass curators), 25 of my favorites ended up on the wrong side of the cut. For your delectation, out of that group of 25, I have selected this baker’s dozen of excellent portfolios that didn’t make it out of the kitchen. Please enjoy them. Also, please let this be your official notification that if you submitted work to Critical Mass which also didn’t make it out of the kitchen, it had very good company - these and plenty more, including the work of seven great photographers whom we have been honored to show at Blue Sky Gallery, and three other photographers from whom I have purchased multiple prints for my own collection. – Christopher Rauschenberg
